At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why we focus our work in three areas: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
NC Ys are the largest provider of child care, and before and after school programs. The Y advocates for legislation that increases access and affordability as well as improves the quality of youth programming.
NC’s Ys have joined forces with other statewide initiatives to make the healthy choice easier for all through the Statewide Pioneering Healthier Communities Initiative. The Y supports increasing access to high-quality, affordable foods with new or improved grocery stores and healthier corner stores in our communities, and improving the built environment in our communities to increase physical activity through active transportation (walking and bicycling).
The Y is a cause-driven organization that provides accessible and affordable services to everyone regardless of their ability to pay. Implementing taxes and fees on non-profits limits the Y’s ability to provide services to those that need us most. In these challenging economic times, non-profits are providing services that are critical to families’ most basic needs. These quality services cannot be delivered without the financial assistance of private and public donors.
As a part of the Y’s commitment to social responsibility, YMCAs have become the voice for communities and the catalyst for positive social change. To learn more about the NC Alliance of YMCA’s position on legislative or regulatory action, contact the Executive Director.
