As you know, in late 2017, YMCA of the USA added child protection and aquatic safety to its list of membership qualifications. The new mandatory policy holds all YMCA branches nationwide accountable for adopting policies and procedures to ensure the prevention of child abuse, with a focus on protecting children from sexual abuse.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and YMCAs have an opportunity to partner with Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina (PCANC) to make sure that your YMCA has everything it needs to show your community how committed we are to preventing child abuse and neglect, and building strong families and safe communities!

PCANC has a Child Abuse Prevention Month Toolkit available online with tips, tools and resources. You will find sample materials such as press releases, letters to the editor, op-eds, and social media posts! Additionally, YMCAs can take advantage of the YMCA Guardians' Five Days of Action materials to focus attention on this issue April 16-20, 2018.

We invite you to get involved in the national movement to bring awareness to prevention programs and policies by planting a pinwheel garden at your YMCA! Visit to order your Pinwheel Home Kits, which include 24 pinwheels and a yard sign. Want a bigger display? Order Pinwheels in cases of 48 for additional pinwheels. Then, take photos and share your pinwheel garden on social media with the hashtags #GreatChildhoods and #PassThePinwheel.

If you have any questions about these materials or Child Abuse Prevention Month, please contact PCANC Communications Coordinator Kristie Demers at or by phone 919-829-8009 ext. 619.

Please be sure your branch follows Prevent Child Abuse NC on social media and share their posts during Child Abuse Prevention Month: Facebook // Twitter // Instagram
